Essential for the artist, architect, or anyone interested in the nature and construction of art studios, this book includes detailed yet easy to understand how-to guides for artists seeking to build a high quality studio of their own. This unique exploration into the design of art studios—ranging from the workspaces of the Old Masters, through the nineteenth century academies, to the most high tech visual arts spaces on earth today—delves beneath the paint-spattered surfaces to reveal key architectural principles that optimize the successful art studio. Technical criteria for architects designing large studio arts facilities are published here for the first time. Safety and health guidelines and typical equipment lists are provided for each studio type, explained through photographs, architectural plans and programming criteria tables. “Here, for the first time, is an opinionated yet empathetic look at the architectural workings of some of the world’s best studios. ATELIÉR reveals the power of architecture to energize human creativity so convincingly, it’s hard to believe this book’s topic has been overlooked for so long. No interior decorating book, this is a serious architectural study that uncovers the practical and psychological secrets at the core of a great studio—and shows you how and why they work.” David Dalton, author of Pop The Genius of Andy Warhol “ATELIÉR Building the Visual Arts Studios of the 21st Century gives us an insider’s look into the private spaces where artists work. It’s a privileged insight and Tony Winters is our personal architect and guru, as he guides the reader from pre-historic caves to the most sophisticated art buildings in the world today. Winters deconstructs art studios and shares an architect’s useful tips and secrets with his readers.” Mark Wakely, executive producer, The Comfort Zone, ABC Radio National, twice recipient of award for excellence in architectural journalism from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects “This is a rare look into artist studios that touches upon art, architecture, history, and the use of light and space. I think this would be of great interest to people designing and building studios, and ways to configure existing spaces.” Brandon Soloff, artist and owner of the teaching atelier Chelsea Classical Studio

I gotta admit, the quality of a lot of the images in this book is pretty poor. Fuzzy resolution. The subject of the book and the research details are splendid, but this is a visual subject and the images are substandard.Product details

It's all here! Take what you need from Tony's book and build your perfect art studio. One of a kind book.
An essential book for artists, among them painters, sculptors, & printmakers, who are serious about creating their own functional work spaces. A well thought-out book with attention to their special needs.

I liked this book , it has solid advice for artists setting up their work spaces . I also find impressive his research into past and present art studios, and good general information . In addition , it makes pretty good reading.
This has to be one of the most comprehensive and insightful books ever written about visual arts studios in the modern world.
It succeeds on so many levels that anyone considering building a studio, or anyone interested in joining a studio should read this excellent book by Mr. Winter. Bravo on a job so very well done!
This book is going to help a lot of artists with their studios. It has practical advice that will be easy to put in effect. Also the pictures of historical and contemporary studios is very interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone considering designing their own studio.

I've been considering the idea of creating a printmaking studio at home for some time, but procrastination always won out because the task seemed so daunting. Printmaking involves numerous decisions which warrant serious consideration due to the volatile nature of the chemicals utilized to say nothing of the hazards of fire from self igniting solvents! Enter Mr Winter's book, with a whole section devoted to Printmaking Studios! Organized and thoughtfully written, he's managed to prioritize objectives in an easy to understand manner which is enjoyable and educational to boot. Numerous illustrations add a dimension which words cannot. A rare find on an elusive topic which will be helpful to anyone considering building their own studio.
This is a valuable book for any creative person or institution looking to create a work/show space. It covers a wide range -- from theory and history (it includes Leonardo da Vinci's advice on creating the perfect art studio, for example) to practical specs. The author is an architect and artist, and it shows he has written the book with precision and passion. Sidebars include some offbeat and interesting tidbits - one is devoted to "the origin and role of the nude model" in art classes. This seems to be the only book of its kind. Well worth owning.
I gotta admit, the quality of a lot of the images in this book is pretty poor. Fuzzy resolution. The subject of the book and the research details are splendid, but this is a visual subject and the images are substandard.
